Shirley Ford of the South Tyneside Green Party says 'Hands Off Our Schools'

South Tyneside Green Party's Shirley Ford and Sarah McKeown were part of the regional Greens group at today's Hands Off Our Schools protest - against the plan to force all schools to become academies. We were joined by Andrew Gray of Newcastle Greens, Ralf Russow, Rachel Llewellyn, Andy Blanchflower and Paul McNally of Gateshead Greens and Penny Remfry of North Tyneside Greens.

Shirley spoke at the rally at Monument, on behalf of NE Greens, but also as someone who works in a primary school office here in South Shields, is a parent of a 16 year old at our local comprehensive, a union member & steward. As Greens we stand for every child going to their local school, every local school a good school and a community school. So not only do we oppose any more schools becoming academies, we demand that all academies and free schools must be brought back under the democratic oversight of local authorities.

We can't give up now, we won't give up now, we have to keep fighting every battle - because these are OUR schools!
