Candidate's supporting statement

I am delighted to have been selected as the Green Party candidate for West Park Ward in the local elections. I live in South Shields and have worked for a local authority in an educational role since 1999. My wife was born and raised in South Shields and my stepson attends a local comprehensive school.

Like many others, I have become disillusioned with the mainstream political parties and feel that the Green Party offers a credible alternative. I am standing as a candidate because I wish to have a positive impact on the local area and help create a better future for West Park. I believe that I can offer the people of West Park a fresh voice on the largely Labour council.

Whilst I am sure that environmental issues will become increasingly important in the coming years, the Green Party is also strong on many social issues that many people feel passionately about. I firmly believe that the Green Party’s policies can make a positive difference to the lives of people in West Park by:

Protecting low-paid workers - Making sure that low-paid workers earn enough to provide for themselves and their families, without relying on in-work benefits.

Fighting for fair pensions and free social care for older people - Ensuring that older people live free from the fear of poverty.

Making sure that a good standard of education is available to all children – Making sure that all children can access well-funded public sector schools, which are accountable to parents and local authorities.

I am optimistic that the Green Party will play a significant role in creating a fairer society, in the interests of the many rather than the few.
